It takes courage to make lifestyle changes and faith to overcome our obstacles. My hope is that by sharing my personal and professional experiences with you, we can both be courageous in our journeys of faith and fitness!

You’ve been lied to.  How do I know?  Because I was lied to as well and now I know better.  I’m here to tell you the truth.  You ready for this?

A “healthy lifestyle” does not consist of a specific set of rules done every day.

Don’t get me wrong.  Consistency to the same actions build habits and that’s what we want in the longterm.  BUT, the lie that discourages people like you and me is the illusion that we shouldn’t be falling and failing after a certain time.  How many times have I said “I’m a trainer for goodness sake!  I should be able to turn down a freaking brownie!”  or  ”I know ALL of the right things to do, yet I have gained 5 pounds?  What’s wrong with me?!”  Have you said similar things?  I’m guessing you have!  Not because I’m guessing that you’re a failure.  It’s because I’m guessing that you are HUMAN and growing and changing is part of a cycle, a journey and it includes failures…yes, even when you’re a trainer.

I could write a really long post and go into the details of all of this, but I’m going to save some for later.  The most successful people in the world, your healthy lifestyle role models, you know how they do it?  They bounce back fast!  If they have an obstacle, they bust through it.  If they make a bad choice, they decide that the choice doesn’t line up with who they are meant to be so they decide to choose differently the next time.  If they get sick, have an injury, have a huge life changing event or they get down, they find a new way.  Their old way may not work any more.  They might have to develop new habits, but being healthy is a part of their identity so they find a new way to make it work.

So, if you’re in a place where you have failed and you are stuck there, or you if you have found yourself in a place where you need to “begin again,” and you need to figure out the best first steps to do it, I have a short “guide” for you.  I hope it can encourage your heart, encourage the person inside of that skin to get up and get at it…again.

You can download it for free here  I will follow it up with a few accountability emails.  You can always connect with me on Facebook.  I’d LOVE to help you walk through this new step forward.  No more believing the lies of perfection and start embracing the process of change.

Freeze. Unfreeze: A Trick to Melt Fear Paralysis

 one step after the other

Do you ever have days when you get up, get ready, and then get settled in to get some work done and realize that everything on your list just doesn’t look fun, seems like it will be a long process and will probably make you completely uncomfortable or stressed?  No?!  You don’t have those days?!  Oh my goodness, we should trade “to do” lists!  Ha ha!

Today was one of those days.  I sat down, I looked at my list and because of the feeling it gave me in my gut, I stared at my computer, I practiced procrastination by scrolling through Facebook and then stared some more.  So what am I doing blogging then?  You might think I’m avoiding my list since I’m blogging.  It could appear that way, but actually, I decided to write because it takes me back to the reason why I do what I do.  It revives my passion and fans my flames.  If I can stir up that “why”, then I can get to the “what”, even if it seems challenging, overwhelming or stressful.

What in the world does this have to do with the price of beans in China?!  Because I want to encourage the girl who feels that way about her health today.  The one who feels like she knows what she needs to do, but when she thinks about it, she feels like it’s going to be a long process, be uncomfortable, maybe stressful and very challenging.

If you’re paralyzed by these feelings, get overwhelmed just reading this and have feelings of defeat, then stop and take time to go back to your reason “why” you want to make the changes.  Maybe you need to go play with your kids and think about how it will feel to play with them with full energy, no inhibitions and fully present.  Maybe you need to journal some thoughts while you’re experiencing some emotion.  What will it feel like this summer to wear shorts confidently again?  Maybe you need to dream and think about what it will be like when all of it seems easy instead of difficult!  Maybe you need to line up your resources with your plan and take one brave step at a time.  You think?  I mean, how long can we be paralyzed by feelings and stories we tell ourselves?  Unfreeze.

Just writing this has given me a little spark.  Thinking of the face on the other side of this blog post, thinking of the fear you might be feeling, and empathizing with feelings of discouragement and defeat…it’s making me pull up my big girl panties, ladies.  I have a mission.  I have a purpose.  I have a reason “why” for every task on that hard “to do” list.  Ok, signing off because I have some things to do.

What is one step you can take today that takes you closer to where you want to be?

Why is it important you take that step?

If you keep taking small steps everyday, where will you be in 3 months, 6 months, 1 year?

How will that change things for you and for those that matter most to you?

Flab-U-Less Summer

Here’s the thing, some of you know me and know I’m not in the “body changing” industry to make people feel like they need to have some sort of defined “perfection” or that the true picture of health is a cellulite free, dimple free, fat free body.  My hope is always to help identify who you are because of Whose you are, and from that to instigate a drive and desire to be the best version of you.

It’s not a night and day process.  I’ve been in “process” for 18 years!  That might not sound encouraging, but the truth is that I’ve had victories, I’ve had stumbles, but I’ve learned A LOT!  I’m the best version of me I’ve ever been.  Am I the smallest I’ve ever been?  No.  Am I cellulite free?  No.  Do I have a goal to change some things?  Yes.  But, my mindset is in the right place and it’s a daily choice.

I tell you that FIRST before I use the “play on words” title of a “Flab-U-Less” summer fitness planner.  I want you to make progress.  I want that progress and your commitment to free you from being trapped in your head about what you are not.  I want you to discover the beauty that you all ready ARE and cultivate a desire to nurture that beauty.  It starts in the heart and in the head.

So, this free tool is to be a resource to you as you start to think about summer.  I want you to feel awesome in your shorts and not avoid wearing them because you are hiding something.  I want you to never turn down a pool party, a trip to the lake or another mixed company party because of feeling embarrassed about your body.  I don’t want you to miss out on life and I don’t want the people in your life to miss out on you!

So here, girls, take this download.  I will email you a few workouts to plug into the plan as well as a heartrate training guide to help you be more effective in your workouts and more in tune to your body.  And please, come connect with me on my Facebook page!

Gettin’ Naked Series: You Can’t Get the Old You Back

I want to be at my “pre-baby” weight. I want to be the size I was in college. I want to feel as good as I did when I was in my 30′s. Seriously??! Why? I’m not trying to a brat. I’m actually quite good at being a brat, but I reserve my brattyness usually for the ones I love the most. Isn’t that nice of me? What I want to say to you today is this. I learned something this last year. I lost something this last year. I lost weight, I lost confidence, I lost dreams, I lost years of time, effort, dedication and commitment…I didn’t lose hope (completely) and I didn’t lose faith. And because of that, I gained a new perspective on so many things. Here’s what I want to tell you today. You don’t want the old you, you can’t HAVE the old you…Elsa says it best, “the past is in the past.” How about believing for the best version of you that you have ever seen?!

How about being healthier than you were before your pregnancy? How about feeling better in your 40′s than you did in your 30′s? Uh, yes! We spend too much time trying to go back to something and holding on to something from our past that we can’t receive the greater things waiting in our future. You have to quit reading the last chapter if you want to move on to the next one!

better than you were, letting go

I started this blog series “Gettin’ Naked Series: The Truth about Getting My Pre-Baby Body Back” a week after I had my baby (exactly a year ago today.) At that time, I had lost little in comparison to what I was about to lose. I thought I was going to set out to get back what I had, to get back to the old me. I was happy there. I was comfortable there. I was not everything I was made to be then either.

Losing things allowed me to receive things that I never could have dreamed up myself. That is just the way that God works. He thinks way better than we do. Best gift giver EVER right there. I can’t WAIT to share more with you, but I want you to come WITH me. Let go of the old you. Quit striving for what you thought was good in your past and reach out for what could be the best yet in your future. It’s scary, I know. I had days were I wondered if I would ever like my life again. Don’t lose hope. Don’t lose faith. The best is yet to come.
